You can't see it in the photos, but I had about 2 plates full.
-
3
Microwave for 5 minutes at 700w.
-
4
Take it out and mix it well.
-
5
At this stage, only the onions in the center will be wilted.
-
6
Microwave for another 5 minutes.
-
7
Put the butter and grated garlic in a heavy pan and start heating.
-
8
When the kitchen is filled with a wonderful aroma...
-
9
...add all the wilted onions!
-
10
A pot full of onions...
-
11
Sprinkle in a little salt and saute over high heat.
-
12
Scrape off the brown bits that form at the bottom of the pan, and add stir them back into the onions.
-
13
If you can't scrape the browned bits off with the onions, add 1-2 tablespoons of water to the pan - it will sizzle!
-
14
Keep scraping.
-
15
Repeat steps 6 and 7, and the onions will become beautifully caramelized like this!
-
16
Season with salt and pepper to finish.
-
17
I measured how much time it took!
-
18
Wow, it only took 16 minutes and 10 seconds to become this beautifully caramelized!
-
19
Leave to cool...
-
20
The onions are easier to use later if you spread them out very thinly in the ziplock bag.
-
21
You can use the onions in all kinds of things!
-
22

-
23
You can use the onions in French onion soup -, hashed beef stew, and simmered dishes to add tons of rich flavor.
