Prepare the tortellini as directed on the package. Then drain it and set aside in a colander. Since I hate doing dishes, I use the same pan to prepare the soup while the tortellini chill out in the colander.

Remove casing from the sausage and toss the sausage into the pan over medium heat. Chop garlic and green onions and add them into the pot. Breaking up the sausage into little bits and pieces, cook until browned. If you are using a very lean sausage, you may have to add a bit of oil to keep things from sticking to your pan.

Once the sausage is no longer pink, add remaining ingredients, except the tortellini and Parmesan cheese, and bring to a simmer. You want to make sure to add the sugar because it keeps the tomatoes from getting all bitter and nasty.

Simmer for about 20 minutes, long enough for all the flavors to mingle, fall in love, and marry.

Divide the tortellini between eight bowls, and ladle the hot soup over the noodles.

Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese or even a little mozzarella if you're feeling extra spunky today.
