In dutch oven or heavy saucepan combine sugar, butter, water and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture comes to a full boil (7-9 minutes) Boil, stirring often, until candy thermometer reaches 300F or small amount of mixture dropped into ice water forms a hard brittle strand (18-22 minutes).

Remove from heat; STIR IN VANILLA. Spread on waxed paper lined 13x9 inch baking pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips over hot candy; let stand 5 minutes. Spread melted chocolate evenly over candy; sprinkle with pecans. Cool completely. Break into pieces.

Notes: For best results allow to cool overnight.
