1 c. chopped dates
1 c. boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. butter and 1/2 c. vegetable shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. chopped nuts
1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
