With a fork, stir together the butter and the sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy, then stir in the eggs one by one. In a separate bowl, sift the flour, cornstarch, baking powder and ground hazelnuts together, and stir into the egg mixture gradually, alternating with the milk. Finally stir the chopped chocolate bar into the batter, then pour it into a greased and floured loaf pan. Bake for about an hour. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan on a wire rack for about 10 mins. Tip the cake out of the pan and allow to cool completely.

Melt the dark chocolate in a bain marie or in a heat-proof bowl over a pan of hot water. To make the decorative hearts, spoon 2 tablespoons of the melted chocolate into a piping bag, then on a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper, draw a heart shape, then fill it in with more chocolate. Transfer the sheet of hearts to the refrigerator for 30 mins until they are set. Meanwhile, spread the remaining chocolate over the top and sides of the cake. Allow the chocolate to cool a little, then, just before it is set, decorate with some of the chocolate hearts along the sides. Just before serving, dust the top with some cocoa powder and decorate with the remaining hearts. Serve with whipped cream, if desired.
