1
Heat a large skillet on medium heat.
-
2
Its best to use a stainless steel skillet instead of a black bottom skillet.
-
3
If your skillet is large enough to lay out 4 slices of bread, add half of the butter to the skillet.
-
4
If your skillet is just large enough for 2 slices of bread at a time, use about a quarter of the butter (a little less than a tablespoon).
-
5
Let the butter melt.
-
6
Watching it closely, stir the butter around a bit until it starts to turn a golden color.
-
7
As soon as it turns a golden color lay each piece of bread in the skillet.
-
8
Move the slices around just a bit to absorb all of the butter in the pan.
-
9
Let it cook until the bottom sides of the bread have a nice toasty look to them.
-
10
Once the bottom sides of the bread are toasted, remove them from the pan for just a second and put them on a plate.
-
11
Add the remaining butter if your skillet is large enough for 4 slices of bread.
-
12
If youre cooking two at a time, add about another tablespoon of butter to the pan.
-
13
Next, put the slices of bread back into the pan with the toasted sides up.
-
14
Then, add the cheese to each toasted side of the bread.
-
15
Add the onion rings on top of the cheese (optional).
-
16
When the bottom side of the slices of bread has a nice toast to it, make a sandwich out of two of the slices of bread and cheese.
-
17
Repeat with the other two slices of bread, making a second sandwich.
-
18
Cover the pan with a lid and turn the heat off while the cheese melts.
-
19
Serve warm when the cheese is completely melted.
